My third question is how did you decide out of all the other jobs to get into this type of business, and what was your initial goal in the end?  Well I’ve had much experience in my business before I went into it.  I got into this business because it seemed like good money.

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places
Description: japanese/korean fast food
Well my reason for opening up a fast food restaurant was mainly because my dad had one. I never really knew I wanted to have my own fast food place untill i had a falling-out with my dad and he fired me, so I was jobless and broke. It was actually my good friend Ken who told me I should start my business. I knew I could run it, it was just getting started that had me doubting myself. Thankfully Ken helped me by building the first restaurant and my friend Richie provided me with equipment which I later paid them back. My initial goal was simply to prove to my father that I could do it and to get money to pay off my bills.

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
Description: Engineering and CAD consulting services.
I worked at a consulting engineering firm for almost twenty-three years. I grew up there and, in a way, the company grew up with me. I found it to be a very entrepreneurial company in the way that engineers would go out and market work, win jobs and then carry out the projects.  I earned my business degree much later in life and graduated in my late thirties. I didn’t realize how much college would prepare me for starting my own business. I’ve since learned that there is a lot of writing involved. There’s writing to market work and prepare scopes, proposals and correspondence. College complimented my years of experience by providing the tools to manage all of the back office needs of running a business. While at my former company, I was on a long-term assignment at a client’s office providing consulting services. This was a project that I had learned about through my network before helping to write the proposal and interview to win the job. Although I had the backing of my company, I was working independently and doing a great job; my client extended my contract and later offered me a full time position. At that point I understood that I had everything I needed to start my business and go after the projects that I really enjoyed doing and get paid more to do them. My initial goal was to work independently for at least two years. Even if my business didn’t work out, I knew I would be a better person for the experience. I am now in my sixth year, thinking about expansion and generally really enjoying it.

NAICS: 451 Sporting Goods, Hobby, Book, and Music Stores
Description: Sporting goods, Hobby store
I decide to get into this type of business because of my passion for skateboarding. I was skating for a long, I still skate till this day skateboarding just has been one of my passions for a long time. Then I got my first job in a skate shop where I learned a lot about business and how to run a business but that skate shop closed do to poor business and the owner of the shop was not willing to change with the times. At that time that was the only skate shop in the area and now people that skated had to go to other places to buy their supply so I saw that my area had a need for a skate shop that was local. When i open my shop at the time skateboarding was growing and becoming a lot more popular so opening my business was at that time was the right thing to do. My initial goal was just to give the local skaters a place to hang out and buy what they need to continue to skate.

NAICS: 623 Nursing and Residential Care Facilities
Description: Dental Care
I was an immigrant in the 70’s and the one and only goal here in America was to survive. I’ve already escaped the bad conditions of my country, and in this “Land of Opportunity”, I had to make something of myself. I grew up being fed tales of doctors and lawyers. Of course I was enticed by the amount of money and respect either brought to the table. Being a lawyer was out of the question as I did not know any English, so I thought that a doctor was the right choice. As I became more knowledgeable, I realize that working at hospitals wasn’t so amazing, it seemed terrifying to me. Still, I wanted to work in the medical field, so I transitioned into studying dentistry. After those hard years at USC, I had finally achieved something, a high paying job, and a role that my parents would approve. After working under the wings of other dentists for a few years, I decided it was time to increase my pay, not for me but for the future as I still had other family members who have yet to migrate. Seeing how much success my bosses were having with their offices, I decided to open one up.

NAICS: 532 Rental and Leasing Services
Description: title company
I got into this business because it belonged to my uncle and I worked for him for a while.  When he retired he passed it down to me so it can stay in the family. The business is actually named after his three daughters by using the first two letters of their names.
