Will, first of all. I had no idea I was going to get into this type of business. My goal was to travel, I always dreamed of just traveling around the world. I had my timeshares all saved up. I had bought a huge SUV to drive my grand-kids around and I never thought about opening up my own restaurant before. I have always had a passion for fish, food and cooking, and when I was younger I cooked for lots of people and they use to tell me how good my food taste and that I should open up my own place. So, when I saw this building, the price was right, and I had been saving for a while. I used my saving to purchase this place, but like I mention this was not my regular plan. This happens to just fall into my lap. After 33 years of service it really has been a journey and boy is it hard work. Be careful what you ask for. Ive has been in this business and location for about 5 years now. But when we started it was really bad timing, and I mean it was really bad timing. I told my son, learn everything that he can learn because I want to give you this business once I retire, but if you don’t want it we can let it go and I’ll sale it. I want him to learn everything he can, because it’s nothing like you think it may be.

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
Description: Custom Landscaping & Weekly Gardening Service
I originally started this business because my wife and I had just had our first son and was completely fed up with my job. I had worked in retail as management at Miller’s Outpost and was tired of all the hours, responsibilities and corporate always watching down on you. I decided that I wanted to become my own boss and started a landscaping service with an old pick –up truck I had. My original goal was to be able to make a nice enough income to hold over the household and give me more free time to spend with my wife, new son and future incoming daughter. All in All it was a very big risk and the first year or so was hard and had it struggles. Although thinking back now I am so grateful I chose to take the risk to leave my job and start this business. Now 2 decades later it has built up to what I hoped and paid for my expenses plus more as well as definitely freeing up enough time to spend with my family. No more long weekends and nights!

NAICS: 453 Miscellaneous Store Retailers
Description: Flower Shop
The reason I decided to get into this type of business was because I originally started as a part time temporary employee for someone else, as I continued working there I enjoyed the work I was doing and realized later on that I have the ability to start my own business, and continue doing the work I enjoyed. The best part of was the idea of being my own boss, and the potential income I could create for myself would be more than I was making at the beginning. My initial goal was to open a successful flower shop, have a great and trustworthy team working along the side of me, make above a comfortable income, and really love going to work instead of dreading it.

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
Description: Large animal veterinary practice
I all ways wanted to be a veterinarian ever since I was young. My family had a farm in Atlanta with cows and horses. I went to vet school at Michigan State, and I did work in other practices with multiple Doctors working on cattle and small ruminants (Goats, Sheep, Lamas and Alpacas) before I started my own practice. Being my own boss was my initial goal. Moving to California helped me create a niche market because many of the large animal vets did not work on small ruminants, so that helped me build my practice quicker. Although the work is long and hard at times. You must enjoy what you do and work at what interests you, that’s what I feel will help you achieve your goals.

NAICS: 315 Apparel Manufacturing
Description: CLOTHING BOUTIQUE
I literally had a "passion for fashion." I started out with $1,000 worth of inventory sitting in my garage and my dad suggested I get out and sell it and make it worth something. I started out selling once or twice a week at a local swapmeet and the business I got was shocking. Customers were asking when I would be there again, what time, what days. They'd want to know what else I would be selling. The customer build-up was insane. I also started selling from my house and my customers would bring their cousins and their cousins cousins. That's when I got the initial idea to open my store.

He was originally introduced to the business as he was out of work, looking for a new job. He didn't have any expectations or goals at the time. He was very interested and enticed by meeting many agents and their successes at the time. So he decided to go full steam ahead and started a new career and job at the same time.

NAICS: 451 Sporting Goods, Hobby, Book, and Music Stores
Description: Disc Sport Retailer
I was a player, and it was like discovering candy for the first time. And just like everyone else when they get into it, we had a real passion for it. We started a club and started competing. We also started an Ultimate Frisbee team and that took off, so we started competing with that. Then Ed Headrick (commonly referred to as "The Father of Disc Golf") came out with the Midnite Flyer and wanted us to start selling those, so we did that. Then in 1985, Ron Kaufman (the author and founder of UP! Your Service, a customer service training and consulting company, and the original owner of [Name Removed]) said "I want to sell you my business", so purchased it and moved it down here to Southern California. So, it was a love of the sport and the people around it. And then I drifted toward the organizational side of the sport and was fortunate enough to make a business out of it for a while, and it just expanded and took off from there. I'm a practical guy, I wanted to make some money and we had eat. You're fortunate if you can do what you really like, and you can make money at it. There's not many people that can do that, and we're fortunate enough. It's a very unique activity and sport in general, and to be able to supply the tools that everyone uses for those sports is great, and if you enjoy that activity, it makes it even better.

NAICS: 811 Repair and Maintenance
Description: General Mechanics
I've always loved cars! As a kid I would take apart old motors and put them back together as a hobby. I eventually got really good at it so I would always look for that same line of work in which over the years I've learned a lot and gained much experience. A friend of my father come across a good offer for a location but the cost was too much for him alone but he recognized the good deal and didn't want to let it go, so he asked me if I was interested in sharing it with him. We discussed it, worked out some details, and I've been in business ever since. My initial goal when I decided to go into business for myself, which I believe is the goal of the majority of the people who decide to do this, was basically to be independent and provide for my family, and so far I'm doing alright.

NAICS: 425 Wholesale Electronic Markets and Agents and Brokers
Description: International Metal ScrapTrader
After working in the industry for 20 years for 2 different companies, one was a aluminum foundry and the other was a copper and brass foundry I learned how to buy scrap from the Latin countries because of my spanish speaking ability. However what I purchased was always delivered to the U.S. and was upgraded to then sell to Asia. I was laid off from my job and that's how I decided to trade metal for myself. My goal became to teach my suppliers in Latin America to upgrade the metal themselves and go directly to Asia without having to come to the U.S.

NAICS: 453 Miscellaneous Store Retailers
Description: sells antiques and home decor
“When I first started the business, I became a vendor. I sold in another mall situation, not unlike my own. And I found out that when you go out there and you go to state sales and flea markets, you can take that merchandise into a store and sell it for between 3 and 10 times what you paid for it, which you can’t do in a normal resale situation, usually in retail you can only turn something 2.2 times what you paid for it.--- To make money (laughs)”
