Description: Freelance Make-up Artistry
I’ve always loved makeup and people would always complement me on how great my makeup application was. People then started asking me if I did makeup on other people. At first, I would decline request for me to do other people makeup, I was good at doing my own, but wasn’t sure if I would be good at doing other peoples. I eventually gave in when my younger sisters had all their friends come over and they got ready for homecoming together. I did my sisters make up and then all the other girls offered to pay me to do theirs. I saw it as an opportunity to make money doing what I love to do. My goal was just that, to do something that I love while making money.

It all started with a company I was working for I was just a regular employee and my boss really liked me he started leaving me in charge and the customers liked the way I was. One day a customer by the name Armando approached me and started questioning me. He asked me questions such as how do you do it to always be working with a smile on your face and always receive us with such a positive attitude? He also asked me if I had my own upholstery business? I said no that I was just an employee? Armando, then said that’s really sad because if you had your own business I would totally recommend you to people that I know. Later own Armando offered me a job he wanted me to complete and order he had for a Night Club, but he wanted me to do this order a lone. I accepted, the club liked my services and they recommended me to a different customer. I then later left the company I was working for, because with the personal orders I had I didn’t have time to go to work anymore. That’s when I realized I was already doing it on my own. Thanks to my first 3 personal upholstery orders I was able to save up and by my own tools. That’s how I started without even knowing what I wanted to do, but the moment that Armando offered me that opportunity I knew it was something good. I took the right decision and that's what business is about. It is about taking a risks. I didn’t have an initial goal since I didn’t know that, that first opportunity was going to open doors for me. Now my goal is to keep growing and i'm even thinking about opening a new ware house where I can keep all my materials maybe hire few people who can help me out with the new orders.

NAICS: 315 Apparel Manufacturing
Description: Women's Contemporary Dress Manufacturer
3. I have worked in the Java Industry for close to thirty years. I started as an intern and became Head Designer at Perception Inc. and was recruited to NYCAL and so on. After nearly 30 years in the fashion industry as a designer, I wanted to expand my horizons into the entrepreneurship field. I had a minor setback in 2014 due to health issues but continued my business after recovering. I graduated FIDM, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise, way back when and after graduating, I made a comfortable living for myself and my family. But I could not continue working as head designer until retirement. There needed to be change so I made BOTICA 637 INC. My initial goal for this business was to focus on wholesale. It worked amazing for about 3 years but competiton was too much and a dress I sold for $19.50 was continuously docked by the wholesale buyer to $17.50 and later they asked for $14.75. I declined orders from that company and started building an online platform.

NAICS: 311 Food Manufacturing
Description: Mexican Candy Company
This is a family business but I didn't decide to follow in my grandfather's and father's footsteps until I was about to graduate from college. I worked at Baskin Robbins since I was in high school and I really wanted to focus on my last year as a business student. I asked my Dad if I could work with him because I knew he could offer flexibility. While I was working in the family business customers began to ask for my help, vendors wanted to offer me pricing and employees began to come to me for help and suggestions. I began to notice places where we needed improvements and slowly implemented new ideas and more machinery. Before I knew it, I had quit a part time job and inadvertently gotten a full time job. My initial goal was to finish school and get a career, and that's what I did. I didn't plan to work in the family business, i just got sucked in and liked it very much.

NAICS: 451 Sporting Goods, Hobby, Book, and Music Stores
Description: Baseball Program
It was definitely passion that brought me into this business. My brother had been a baseball coach prior to me and I had played earlier in my life as well. I had a passion for the game and found myself wanting to teach it at an early age. I wanted to share what I had learned by playing myself and coaching was the perfect way to stay around the game. I had no initial goal other than to better youth kids in the game. I wanted to give them the shot I feel I didn't quite have.

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places
Description: Mexican Food Restaurant
I have always had a passion for food and have always had the drive to be a leader. I worked in different fields as a manager of people and processes. As the years went by, I began to seriously consider taking the chance of owning a restaurant. For a long time, I teetered back and forth and the “what ifs”. After all, it’s not just my life that I’m taking a risk with. Whether I’m a success or failure would have an impact on my family and my way of life. After my divorce I found my opportunity, and I seized it. Initially, my goal was to realize my dream and have a successful restaurant. I realized that I needed the guidance and support of those who are or have been in the field. That is an ongoing process which is never-ending, but I continue to evolve and learn. So far, I would day that my dream has been a success.

I always enjoyed helping people who wanted to be helped. The friendly environment for the center and staff generally helps students in need feel welcome and enjoy coming in for the help they need. What initially drove me was it was my family business. My parents and my aunts and uncles originally started my business, and when I was older I took over my own store. It wasn't my initial goal to take over the family business but working with my parents and my family made me passionate about it and in time I wanted to carry on all of my family's teachings and work.
