Description: Small Cafe
I was a cook for 30 years and then the business moved to another location. Luckily, I learned inside from my employer as to how to manage a business and after they closed their business I was inspired to open my own. I have continued my passion ever since and even though it does not make me rich it does pay my bills and allows me to have a sense of freedom I cannot get anywhere else. I really did not had an initial goal per say I just wanted my autonomy.

Description: Hair salon
I actually got into the hair business because i don’t like to go to school so i went for a trade. Then i realized that i had the gift of relationship so i just capitalized them both. So through all of this i learned that genterciety has been one of the biggest things i learned. I believe that generosity is missing in business, a lot of people won't be generous until they make the money, but if your generous on the front end, then you’re actually enjoying your job and business more.

NAICS: 441 Motor Vehicle and Parts Dealers
Description: Sell and install vehicle accessories
When I started this business it was not because I liked cars and trucks, it was because I did not have a job at the time and I needed an income. It was hard for me to find a decent job, me being Mexican. One day I was at a party were I met a guy whole worked at a warehouse that wholesaled auto accessories and other car parts. I talked to him on how it worked in order to be able to buy at whole sale price. I then thought about selling the accessories at my local swap-meet, because I knew there the type of customers i could target. There were already sellers who were selling tires, even a tinting guy. So in my mind I knew I needed to open up business there. I did little more research locally of who was in this type of business and at the time there was not a lot of business selling auto accessories. I then went on to open up my own business. I went on to open my own business not knowing how it would turn out, thankfully everything has gone well, and I know how a shop as well which has been open for 5 years.

NAICS: 484 Truck Transportation
Description: Trucking Transportation Company
I was getting tired of my previous job, and a partnership opportunity came up. I wanted to try something new and risky. Don’t be afraid of trying something new like I did. Getting into this business was difficult at first, because I knew nothing about import and export and also had no idea how to run a business since I had never done it before. I decided to take the risk to give it a try in order to experience something different and hopefully make money off it. I hoped to make relations with my customers, employees, as well as my business partner. My initial goal for the company was to make the business survive as well as provide people with jobs, and of course make some money from the work.

NAICS: 551 Management of Companies and Enterprises
Description: Financing and Investment
3. My father, Romeo Sr., established this business. Initially it was a Credit & Lending Corporation until 2012 where it changed to “Role Finance & Investment Corporation.” He was always a hard worker and wanted a better life for my family so he started and built this empire from the ground up. My father always liked being in control and taking his life into his own hands. He only went to college for one year and wanted to pursue civil engineering. He could not afford to go to school so he worked on a farm for half of his life. After he earned enough he decided to establish his own business in the heart of the city that we lived in. When he passed away in 2005, it was my responsibility to take the lead of the business and be the president of this corporation.

NAICS: 812 Personal and Laundry Services
Description: Barbershop
Well basically I had family who did this so I was taught the ropes. It basically was my main goal to be an owner and work for myself. I'm for the people so I want to be a service for people. I like to make people look good and it therefore makes me feel good as well. For example, when my customers come back and tell me their stories of their latest experiences like how they had a good weekend and met a new person or how they got this promotion or a new job because they say their hair looked so good that it then made them feel good and confident. That's where a big investment comes from. A lot of other barbers don't see it that way as far as barbering that when your customers come in for their haircut because they have that special event or special occasion coming up and you make them look good and ready for their event, they will remember that and will definitely be back for the next time. Another thing I like to do is give a free haircut for a customer's birthday and make them look real good. After that I've basically gained a regular client and know that they will be back for the next 11 months of the rest of the year.

NAICS: 238 Specialty Trade Contractors
Description: Plumbing company
After I got out of the army airborne I had no real potential job offers that I could see myself in the future doing, and being passionate about. So I found myself at the unemployment office in search of something to feed myself and my family. I went through the job board and found a plumbing job. I remember they were paying five dollars an hour, and felt it was the most well paying job on the board. My initial goal was just to have a job, and I knew there was a future for plumbers cause everyone needs a plumber. Thinking back there really was no goal for me, it was just dumb luck. The real turning point for me was after I left my first plumbing company, and worked for a one man business. It was there a man named Dave Smith brought out my passion and inspired me to stay with plumbing. He once told me that plumbers get dirty, but they make a lot of good money. This is what got me motivated.

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places
Description: Chinese food restaurant
I started off as a child in late 80s. I would always go help in my parent's restaurant after school. I kept on doing this all the way to high school because I have obligation to do my family business. During and after college, I worked as a general manager at a Panda Express. It was a mind opening experience for me. When I helped my parents, I only had to do certain tasks since they always took care of everything. But there, I had to do all by myself. I had to work long shifts, sometimes had to stay there like 1 or 2 hour after midnight managing the inventory, covering up for my team mistakes and finally I got burnt out. And I did the most unprofessional thing. I just left the work by simply not going. I have to say this is the most regretful decision that I have ever made. My initial goal was to open restaurants at multiple locations which I am still trying to do. Since right now, my parents have retired and I am the only guy running this restaurant, I can’t give time to expansion.

NAICS: 339 Miscellaneous Manufacturing
Description: Sells musical drum casts
I decided to get into this business because I was in the drum set manufacturing business for over 18 years and have a passion for music and drums. I realized that it was easier and more lucrative to just sell the individual parts to large companies, rather than a whole drum kit to an individual that may not have the money. Instead of a single person spending up to 10,000 I can easily sell small parts for like 185 dollars to companies that want 5 or 10 parts every few months. When I would sell a drum kit to a person, that’s it. They have their drums and that costumer is pretty much gone. Now these big companies constantly return to me for casts. My initial goal was to be independent and to make extra income. I also have two other business, so this fits nicely with my schedule.

NAICS: 423 Merchant Wholesalers, Durable Goods
Description: furniture reatil and furniture wholesale
The reason that i had decided to get into this type of business is because I was born into it. My father had started the business in 1965 and my brother had convinced me into taking over the business from my father instead of selling it when he has passed away. When my father had started and ran the business himself he only had one store and stuck to just that. When my brother had confronted me and asked to partner up with him to take it over i was unsure about doing it. I had wanted to go into another profession but with a lot of persuasion my brother had finally convinced me into it. My initial goal when taking over the business was just to be able to make a comfortable living and my brothers initial goal was to become rich. I didn’t think that i was going to be in this business a very long time but I knew that I would leave it when i wanted to but i will retire when i feel that the time is appropriate.
