I was in management and sales for 30 years. Combined with my handyman business I needed a change of pace and my wife who is also a realtor suggested real estate. I had created a pretty successful business as a handyman my previous experience in management and sales helping a lot. However, I really needed a change in pace but did not want to lose out on what i had taken so long to build. My wife’s suggestion allowed me pursue other work that had a flexible time schedule allowing me to arrange my weeks in such a way that I can do both. So I guess what i am trying to say was my goal was to enter a career with a flexible schedule that could supplement my income while also drumming up business for my other ventures.

Description: Plumbing Business
I was always into fixing things from a young age, my father was a hard worker and I think I got the mentality from watching him. I started working at a company and was making decent money and after I gained multiple years of experience with the whole thing, I realized that I knew a lot about the business and how things worked so I decided to start my own. It was a hard choice to leave the money I was making and a gamble but I think it was the right choice. My overall goal was to have a business that was honest, successful, and also profitable. I think that I have done all of those things with this business, it may not be the most glamourous job out there but it is something that I enjoy.

NAICS: 531 Real Estate
Description: Rehab Homes and Property Management
"My initial goal, was to make money. I knew this could be a career I could go into, make money, and that it wouldn't go away. People need air, water, and shelter, and I knew that by selling a 'need' would work in my favor. Back then, commission was a lot higher, and money was more steady. Before 2008, real estate was not only much simpler, but more people were willing to buy and sell. Now it is much harder, but my initial goal has stayed the same. Deciding to get into this business took a lot of trial and error with other jobs. I had majored in business and still was unsure with which direction I wanted to go. I interned for Pepsi, and had a part-time job as a substitute teacher. After one year of my internship, I learned how to be a better salesman, and then realized I no longer wanted to try teaching. I was then approached with the opportunity to work for a bank, who added to my salesperson foundation. After working there for a little under a year, the opportunity of becoming a real estate agent came, and I jumped on it. It was the best decision I could have made, because not only do I love what I do, but so do the people I choose to hire."

Description: Beauty Salon
I worked for the previous owner for a short period of time. After a short period of time the owner wanted to close up the salon. That is when I thought to myself, what if I were to buy and run the salon on my own. After discussing it with my husband and family we took the challenge and started my business. In order to get money to rent the location and continue with the business we took out a loan from our house to use as a financial support to start up the salon. My initial goal was simply to have a business of my own in something that I love and enjoy doing. Part of the goal included making a living off something that I am passionate about doing.

NAICS: 531 Real Estate
Description: Real Estate Broker
I got into this business completely by accident. I was working as a paralegal and wanted to buy my first house. I wanted to understand how the process worked so I read a real estate book and took the exam to see if I would pass. In those days, there was not an education requirement like there is now. I received my license and put it in a drawer. I continued working as a paralegal. A year later, the real estate broker that had an office next door came in to see if we could recommend a bookkeeper. I was hired as a part-time bookkeeper for the real estate broker while working as a paralegal. The broker found out I had my license and started sending me to open houses. Before I knew it, I made my first sale. I loved it. I left the security of my paralegal job to work as a real estate agent full time. To be honest, when I started working as a real estate agent, my first goal was to pay my bills and eat.

NAICS: 812 Personal and Laundry Services
Description: Hairstylist
This job was just to cut my daughter's hair and that’s all it was at first. It started turning into a job once my family and friends started coming to get their hair cut from me. Then I started dying hair and doing touch ups. Slowly but surely I started to look into coloring and cutting styles. I started going to classes for hair and asking how to get certain styles. I bettered myself to give my loved ones the looks they wanted. I never intended to start up a business from this. It's been growing over these past few years. It's taken a little longer because I have my normal job that I work full time. I don’t regret taking these classes. They have really paid off.

I am a serial entrepreneur, in that, I have already started three businesses. The first business I started was many years ago when I was still raising small children. It was a fashion-related enterprise and it was tailor-made for a work-at-home mom. Since the early 1970s, I have always wanted to be in fashion. As a young girl I knew that someday I would gravitate to fashion as a part of my life. In the first ten years of my career I worked for other companies. I then started my own business after being inspired by my father who ran his own business. My first business lasted about four years. In my second business, I doubled that time working eight years. Currently I am into my third business which started in 2005 and I have been running it for the past twelve years. My current business has been the most successful because I haven’t had the combined responsibility of raising children at the same time. My initial goal was really to make a little extra money, while at the same time to pursue my interest in fashion.

In high school i had a 1972 Chevy Nova as my first car and it was always breaking down on me. And me being in high school i barely had any money to pay a mechanic to fix my car all the time. So i bought some basic tools and tried to fix my car myself. Slowly but surely I started to get the hang of it, my friends would ask me fix their cars for them. So i started working out of my mom's garage on the side until it was getting out of hand. I had so many cars at my mom's house i had to expand. In 2009 i opened up my own shop but still worked for the union as a welder. I never had a goal with this because it was just a hobby that i enjoyed and it is crazy to me that i was able to start my own business with it.

Description: Women's fashion store
“I decided to get into the fashion business when my mom let me have a space on one of the walls of my family’s thrift shop. I had hung only a couple of outfits, it really started out just for fun. But then more and more people started buying, and eventually my parents noticed so they let me expand from the wall to take over the store and here I am.” “ At first I actually didn’t have an initial goal, since it was all for fun I guess I didn’t really think I would get this far, but then as my store started getting more and more popular I decided I wanted to open more stores across California, and thankfully I have already opened two more and I feel truly blessed to be where I am now.”
