NAICS: 238 Specialty Trade Contractors Description: Painting and Furniture Detailing |
| I grew up working with my father painting small apartments as well as many pieces of furniture which he was contracted to do, and being his only son he would offer to teach me tools I would use in the future. The experience helped me learn how to properly set up the paint as well as being able to organize your work area. My initial goal was to start my own business locally at first in my hometown and then keep working to aid it in growing and hopefully earn more profit rather than lose money. |

NAICS: 442 Furniture and Home Furnishings Stores Description: Refurbish and restoring furniture |
| Well I got into this business initially because I was fired from my job as a Retail manager, our store closed and I was pregnant. I was mostly looking into a job I could do at home so that I could spend more time with my son. So I got to thinking about business ideas that I would enjoy doing because I wasn’t very happy at my previous job but couldn’t find myself to part ways with it. Ive always been very creative with crafts and décor and I have decorated my apartment, my boyfriends and my parents. I also had a love for thrift store shopping and vintage items and furniture. So putting little things together that I liked helped me pursue this business. |

NAICS: 711 Performing Arts, Spectator Sports, and Related Industries Description: Arts and Entertainment Magazine |
| What motivated me to start this business was when I was an art director. My boss would tell me my art sucked and stuff. I liked what I was doing and he was mean. I like designing and I get bored easily. To me the city magazine was boring and I couldn’t find something related to SoCal. I have family who lives outside of California. They would ask me what was going on in California all the time. I decided I should make a magazine that talked about California. Picking a name was hard, and having my own magazine allowed me to do what I wanted like cursing and stuff. My partner and I were researching on google and even if we found a name on google being used we wouldn’t use it. We came up with California Focus Magazine and we went to register it. When we went to get the license, we found out the name had been previously used years ago. Now when I google my business there are lot more results. I would like to keep the name. We are working on our SEO (search engine optimization), it is when you type in our name we are the first to pop out. I had a horrible boss, and I wrote an article about him on my first issue. I purposely placed the magazines nearby so he could read it. I couldn’t say his name but I mentioned how it rhymes with p**s (Chris). I told the story of what he put me through. His sales rep is my friend and he told me how my ex-boss was upset and pacing back and fourth. There was a time where he made me feel like I wasn’t an artist and almost made me change my major. The second someone cusses at you, you need to know you don’t have to be treated like that, he would through my work in trash. It brought my self-esteem down when he would say my work was effing ugly. He impacted me in a lot of fo ways. |

NAICS: 453 Miscellaneous Store Retailers Description: Pet and Pet Supply Store |
| Its funny, I always like pets and a friend of mine told me how he sold bunnies online for a profit. He broke down the process to me and it seemed like something I could enjoy and manage doing. So started with bunnies. I would post them on the WeChat app and friends and friends of friends started asking me to buy them and where I got them. After I sold a few, I went out and found a supplier who sold me cute bunnies for a low price. I would sell bunnies and cages for double the cost I was buying them at. Now not only was I in constant interaction with cute bunnies, but I was making a profit doing it. I soon found out and eventually moved to cats because they made more money. Ragdoll cats could sell anywhere from $1700- $5000.These cats are rare because they are usually fixed and you can only buy them from select people. I have to sell them fixed. They are expensive because 1) they look good 2) they are hardly ever bred. My initial goal was to just make a couple dollars, but now my goal is to own a pet shop. |

NAICS: 115 Support Activities for Agriculture and Forestry Description: Cement Supply |
| I was working for a company that performed this type of work and after watching how they did it I began to think that I could do the same work with more quality control. Basically, I felt that i felt that I could do a much better job. I witnessed several different job assignments that I believed could have looked a lot better. My initial goal was to create a company that could respond to the needs of the contracting community that requested the type of work that my company could perform. Also, another thing was that if I was going to put a lot more of my personal time into something I wanted to expand, I seeked more control over the future of the business. I wanted to make something from scratch into a success. Everyone likes to go out and about doing something they enjoy perfecting whether it be snowboarding, playing baseball, or even even running the field at Mt. Sac with a timer. My point is that as long as there exists passion and desire of fulfillment in a business or the start of a business the outcome can result in success. |

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services Description: Distribution Services |
| For me starting a company was never in my mind as a kid. Growing up was hard because my brother and I grew up in Mexico and moved to the United States when we were respectively 7 and 4. My initial goal growing up was to play professional soccer with my childhood team of Club Chivas de Guadalajara. School wasn’t really my cup of tea, in that I only reached 8th grade before dropping out of school and trying to look for work. I got offered to work at a warehouse by a family friend, working nightshifts, loading and unloading trailers full of boxes. At the time I was intrigue by the idea of making money and just didn’t spend much of the money I made. After working there for 5 years I had saved enough money to buy a small bobtail to help the company move product. I saw the opportunity to start my company with a friend, who then became my brother in law, and just started slow moving for different companies for the lowest rates. We knew we had to start slow and build our reputation for great service. We started to get more work and had to expand, which in hindsight let to where we are at now. |

NAICS: 448 Clothing and Clothing Accessories Stores Description: Clothing Store |
| My clothing business is to influence others to follow their dreams and never give up. We all want to be at the top and my goal is to be positive and motivate others through my progression as a business owner. This is my state of mind and what better way to show it then through a clothing brand. I was surrounded by individuals and things that were not positively influential and I wanted to be that difference. I never intended to do a clothing brand because I spoke about my positive movement through my music. As I started doing music and along with being an artist I saw clothing as another way of addressing a movement. It was a way of branching my idea and being able to support my family. I knew that everyone would not like my music, but if I put it on clothes they might support. Eventually I reached many people and now my movement is tatted on over four hundred people. |

NAICS: 551 Management of Companies and Enterprises Description: management |
| The third question I asked was how did you decide to get in this type of business and what was his initial goal for the business? He said that the reason he got in this business was because before it became a manager he was in a band for 10 years and already understood the business. His Band did not have a manager and so he actually took the role of being the guitar player and the manager. When the band broke up, not only did he have a lot of experience on managing, he already had so many contacts that he had made over the 10 years that he saw value in the contacts and he just couldn't throw it away. His initial goal for the business was to find talented musicians are a talented artist and get them somewhere. “ There is always hidden talent out there waiting to be discovered.” |

NAICS: 524 Insurance Carriers and Related Activities Description: High power Insurance |
| Well I was initially duped into the insurance business. I was in management in retail and I hurt myself and I saw Management training. As it turns out the meeting was to be that an insurance company. So at first they were basically promoting you to want to be in management but they really just wanted insurance agents. Now, 23 years later I'm still doing insurance I found it to be a challenging I found it to be rewarding I found it to be helpful with addressing client needs and everybody needs life insurance and other types of insurance. I found it gave me the freedom that I need; not a type of guy to be intimidated so insurance gave me the freedom to be out and still making a good living. I'm still receiving residuals from prior clients. I'm invested in it I believe in insurance. Initially, I started in life insurance Life Health and disability. Three years later I obtained my P&C license which is Property and Casualty and that allowed me to sell Auto Insurance, homeowner's insurance, things of that nature and so I was in that industry for seven years. Sadly I remained in that industry for seven years. After that I started my own agency which I still have today and I still work doing some auto insurance and lots of Life Insurance. The good thing about insurance is that if you make a good impression on your clients are your prospects they refer people to you and they always come back to you as long as you can service them well and provide them with good products at good pricing. |
