Description: Wholesale Toy/Hobby Store
The business was initially inherited from my father after I completed college in 2010. While I was attending college, an economic recession hit (2008). Luckily for me, my parents told me to focus on my studies and not worry about getting a job until I graduated. Once I graduated, I found that jobs were scarce. If you were not doing an unpaid internship, you weren’t getting the high paying job that was promised by many after obtaining a bachelor’s degree. At that time, a bachelor’s degree meant nothing. So, I had a choice to make; either work for a frozen food company for $36k a year (median salary was $45k at the time), or go back to my grass roots and help the family business. I decided that the best thing to do was take over the family business and I haven’t looked back since. I feel like I have learned more just operating this business than I could have ever learned continuing my education.

NAICS: 518 Data Processing, Hosting and Related Services
Description: Perty planning and supplies
I decided to get into this type of business when I was pregnant with my first child. I planned out my baby shower because I wanted everything perfect. When I realized how great of a job I did, I found out that I was not the only who thought so. Relatives started asking me for help so I figured I could begin charging. Now, I have my own place where I keep all my props and rent everything out no matter how big or small the event.

NAICS: 323 Printing and Related Support Activities
Description: IT consultants
I’ve been working with computers and serving customers on some level for nearly my entire professional career. I felt that the last company I worked for was constantly taking on the wrong clients for their businesses model and abusing the few good ones they had. I quit out of frustration without having another job to go to. Rather than going out and looking for a new job, though, I got together with a business partner and we figured we could do it the way we thought would work best. So far it’s been working out.

NAICS: 453 Miscellaneous Store Retailers
Description: Swap Meets
I got into the merchandising business by accident. I used to work as a driver for a telemarketing company, my wife was manager warehouse and I was the driver. They moved out of state because the taxes are too high, and I took advantage of the merchandise they had and bought what I could before I was left in the streets with my wife and son. There’s no scarier feeling than to not make ends meet. I started selling in swap meets and took off from there.

They started off as friends who met during their time at Cal State Fullerton, and wanted to go into business with each other. Both liking to eat themselves, they figured that they wanted to start a restaurant. They first started with trying to franchise a restaurant, and opened up a Quiznos, which quickly went under within 6 months. It's after this that they decided if they were going to fail, they were going to fail on their own accord in their own kitchen, without needing to depend on a corporate menu and culture.

I got into this particular business through family members that were already involved. My brother in laws were already in the industry, so when I partnered with Sal (brother in law) it was somewhat of an easy transition. My previous employment being in the trucking business and that allowed me to get in and start with something I was pretty familiar with. My goal was to earn a good profit and sell something that I had interest in.

NAICS: 446 Health and Personal Care Stores
Description: A small salon for hair services
To make a long story short, barbering was a hobby that turned into a career, I truly love making others happy by making them feel good and confident about themselves. The feeling of seeing someone else feel more confident after a haircut is like no other and is so self rewarding and makes my business so much more worth while. In addition, my initial goal when I first established my own business was to establish myself as a successful stylist and to make sure I stay true to my image as a barber and entrepreneur. However, I knew that in order to achieve this I would also have to put myself out and take risks that others would not be willing to take as an aspiring stylist.
