NAICS: 238 Specialty Trade Contractors
Description: Plumbing Contractor
I was young and didn’t know what to do for a career. I started working for another plumber and learned the trade, and found it was something I was interested in. I found it challenging, yet something I was comfortable doing and made good money at. At first I did not expect to open my own business. There was a growing demand, especially with the increased development in Orange County and I decided I was tired of working for someone else and would like to go into business for myself. My initial goal in starting this business was to make earn a living and provide good service and a quality job to people who needed it. I knew the trade and the industry and felt that I knew how I could provide good service for customers. My initial goal in opening my own business was to be my own boss, and make a decent living for myself and my family. I felt that I would have more satisfaction and freedom and that I could make a better living by owning my own business. I also felt that I could make a difference by providing great service and quality.

NAICS: 441 Motor Vehicle and Parts Dealers
Description: Automotive Parts and Accessories Stores
I decided to get into the auto industry because three reasons: the U.S. being the largest market for auto parts, majority of Americans being hands-on with their auto parts, and the larger price gap between local auto parts providers and us. My initial goal-- as well as current goal-- is to become top Internet seller for auto parts on mainstream website such as eBay and Amazon, and to transform into local brick-and-mortar stores. We currently have the ability to provide in-store pick up at local warehouse, but in progress to setup a showroom to promote our products.

NAICS: 621 Ambulatory Health Care Services
Description: Home Health Care Services
This is real, we are immigrants and health care is the easiest job to get into. We already speak English in the Philippines so it is easy to get into. It is our [people] natural inclination to help other people. I like helping old people and I saw a need for it [elderly care], when you feel a need that is how a business is supposed to start. My initial goal started by asking myself, "how much do I want to make to live comfortably?" In 1998, I said I want to make $6,000 a month. I calculated and worked on it. I had a blue pager and would sleep in my car waiting for the call to get the work I needed to be successful. It is cliché, but it is cliché because it is understood, work really hard. I set the goal and worked really hard to get it. Keep the numbers in your head, what you want to reach, and when you wake up you know what you need to do and what you need to work towards. Visualize and focus, there are many distractions, but focus and you can achieve your goals. Always set your sight higher, that is how I came to own the businesses I do.

NAICS: 335 Electrical Equipment, Appliance, and Component Manufacturing
Description: Engineering Design
For me it was pure and simple survival. Living in the Silicon Valley gave me a new perspective on how important the type of business I decided to go into is. I am good at my job and I was not happy working for other people so I decided that I needed to try and do it on my own and be able to set my own hours and wages. I did find that I worked more hours than I did at other jobs but the results were more rewarding for me. As a married man raising children I also needed to make more money than a regular job was making for me. I found that working my business I was able to support my family and still have extra money to enjoy other things in life.

NAICS: 315 Apparel Manufacturing
Description: Clothing and Shoes
My brother and I first got into this business when my brother got laid off and we needed a source of income to pay the bills. The initial goal was just an extra source of income part-time that will supplement our living expenses. That quickly changed to a full time business as our sales grew and our products were continuously being sought after. The desire for our products was tremendous and the volume of the inventory started building more and more. We started in our apartment with selling one style of boots in one color on eBay, and then it became more colors and different styles to meet customer demands. The feedback from customers helped a lot because we figured out what their wants and then presented it for their particular demand. Now, we do not only sell boots but expanded to print t-shirts on both eBay and Amazon as well as our own site.

NAICS: 811 Repair and Maintenance
Description: Muffler service, catalytic converters
I decided to get into this type of business because my dad owned a muffler shop. He taught me how to do the work and that’s all I really knew how to do. When I graduated high school I decided not to go to college because I already knew how to do mufflers. I asked my dad to help me open up my own garage and pretty much from the age of twenty I’ve been doing that. My initial goal was to be successful and make money. I wanted to be my own boss. I didn’t like the idea of having a manager looking over my shoulder all my working life. I wanted to make my own rules. So far I seem to be pretty good at being my own boss.

NAICS: 453 Miscellaneous Store Retailers
Description: E-liquid Manufacturer
I got into this business actually by it starting out as a hobby. At first I realized how expensive e-liquids can add up to costing. So I thought to myself how much it would cost to start creating my own juice at home and experimenting with my own flavors that I would like. Once I realized how cheap it was to produce, and how good I was at creating great flavors I decided to go ahead and go for it and try and make some money out of it. I have always wanted to work for myself and the high profit margins that other e-liquid manufacturers were making, it just seemed to be the perfect business to start up and I actually found out I really enjoyed manufacturing e-liquids. My initial goal was to be able to work for myself and do something that I had a passion for.

NAICS: 444 Building Material and Garden Equipment and Supplies Dealers
Description: Packaging supplies
I was asked by a friend that was in packaging to interview with their company for a sales position. At the time it seem like the right thing to do. On top of my friend convincing me. It was a great opportunity to really get into sales. I worked there for 7 years prior to working for a distributor in the packaging business for 3 ½ years. With all the training and experience that I went through for 10 years. That company was being sold and my partner and I decided to start our own business. We wanted to do something that the company that we were working for had not really paid attention too. Our initial goal was to give the best customer service and always treat our customers with honesty

NAICS: 561 Administrative and Support Services
Description: Cultivation and Care of Landscaping
I was born, raised, and schooled in Mexico. My mom's side of the family was people of the soil. From this I gained the “green thumb” everyone mentions. I studied and earned a degree in Landscaping Architecture. However, when I first entered this country my education and degrees did not qualify, so out of only means necessary I began with only a few houses. I worked hard to become a well-known around very good communities. I did this not only for myself but for my family. My initial goal was to work to provide for my family as they are and will always be first and foremost my main priority. Becoming someone they can be proud of for creating my own business, which is what I hope to constantly be able to achieve that.
