NAICS: 453 Miscellaneous Store Retailers
Description: Selling & building trophies, banners, plaques
I got tired of the usually routine, which was working a nine to five job, not have much authority to contribute to my old job, following all the rules and listing to all my higher ups. At first it was okay, but as I get older I came to the conclusion that I do not want to do this every single day for the rest of my life. I wanted to have freedom, to have pride in what I do, believed that I can run a business better than my previous employers, and be my own boss. So when I decided that I wanted to open a business, but didn't know exactly what kind of business. So I started as a mobile photography business, then stickers and banners, to now a full Trophy and Sign shop. As time went by the business started to evolved and it continues to grow. Our initial goal was not only to make some extra cash on the side, but to also be our own bosses and to have that freedom we always wanted to have when it comes to our careers.

NAICS: 454 Nonstore Retailers
Description: Woman's Clothing
Before starting this business my husband and I were contemplating what business to get into. We were talking to family and friends to try to get some feedback and they brought up the issue that their weren't any local places to buy trendy clothing for women. They were looking for something different, something that you couldn't find in any local shopping malls. Our initial goal was to work for ourselves, and to be out own bosses. We knew that whichever business we chose to open had to be something that were passionate about. Luckily enough we were both passionate about fashion. Our goal was to stand out and create a place where women could go and buy clothing as an expression of who they are. This worked out perfectly because we had the best of both worlds, we started a business that we loved, out friends and family were happy and we were profitable.

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
Description: Prepares tax returns for people
How did I decide to get into this business- It was decided when a co-worker of the agency I was working for at the time, asked me to help him in his business of tax preparation. My friend started the business in his home/garage. Since this service is seasonal the business was great, but after twelve years he could no longer keep the business because it grew and the city did not allow him to run that business in a residential area because of issues with parking. He told me that he was quitting the business and asked me if I wanted to keep it. I accepted and opened up a small office in a near-by commercial building and notified all my clients of the new business location. My goal was to make money and help others.

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
Description: Life/Business coaching, Emotional and Behavioral change
I decided to get into this type of business because of my own experiences; therefore I created this idea or solution not just to help myself but to also help other people. I had my own story (problems) like everyone else and there came a point in my life where I felt lost, stuck and overwhelmed. Once I started to look for solutions, I found them! I became an expert in the field of Human Behavior and Mind Potential. My life drastically improved and I wanted to help other people change their life also. We now teach other people how to change and improve the quality of their life/business through seminars, workshops and one on one coaching. My initial goal was to be able to help myself then be able to help others through my own experience. With my own problem I was able to spark a business.

NAICS: 236 Construction of Buildings
Description: Construction Company
"In 1997, when I opened my business I decided that I wanted to become a general contractor to provide quality construction and remolding to the Los Angeles and Orange County for over 18 years. I wanted to start my own business where I didn't have to always get my hands dirty. I wanted to build something on my own, and make it grow into the vision that I have for it. Prior to this I already had experience in construction, so I already knew what kind of work I was getting into. My initial goal was to start this business from scratch, and working my way to the top by slowing building loyal customers who would be a part of the growth to my business."

NAICS: 332 Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing
Description: Metal Heat Treating Services
How did you decide to get into this kind of business and what was your initial goal? What makes people decide what industry they want to get into is a reflection of their previous experience. If you grew up in a carpentry family, normally you are expected to get into the same industry. In my case, my previous career was investment banking and I was passionate about technology (information technology factor). With this kind of experience I decided to choose an industry where I could implement both my career and my passion. Also I choose to acquire a small business to make the company better. I wanted to grow my own business. I believe it was my background that made me chose the metal heat treating industry. My motivation at the beginning was to get into this business was making money. I believe this is the primary motivation for any entrepreneur. At the beginning your business is your career. It is a thought choice to dedicate so much time and effort to a business, but after a while you start seeing the results and your motivation and priorities change. Now my motivation is to build a greater organization by improving one business at a time. You cannot do this by yourself, your business will grow with the support of your group or tenants. Working with your people is more important and exciting than making money. So building your business inside out is building the connections.

NAICS: 332 Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing
Description: custom meatal welding work
I have always been interested in working with meatal. As a child I was fascinated with the sparks and strength of meatal. I took a high school ROP work program class on welding, and after learning the basics I started to work at my dad’s automotive and transition repair shop. After having a family disagreement and a falling out at my dad’s shop I got a welding job at a water tank manufacturing company. I made good money at the water tank shop, but one day a water tank got lose and rolled onto me and as I tried to stop it I hurt my back bad. I could no longer work for the water tank company and spent some time on work man’s comp recovering. When I recovered my goal was to make enough money on my own to not have to go back to the tank company. I began doing jobs of my own for people that I already knew and it turned into a small business some months making me far more money than I did at the tank shop.

One of owner is an agriculture major mostly dealing with animals. Out of college he had a manufacturing business, that dealt with plastic, for about twenty-five years. After retiring, he and his wife had an opportunity to buy an avocado grove. At this point the grove was relatively small and they had no intention of turning it into a business. After deciding to go ahead and start a small business the initial goal was to break even. The previous owner of the land had a similar business but on a much smaller scale. They had originally decided to buy a small piece of the land but got talked into buying a whole lot more. Once they were able to brake even they then expanded from a very small business to a much larger business that now brings in a profit.

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places
Description: Mexican Resaurant
Initially when I came to the United States I started to work as a sharecropper. But after working a couple years I quickly learned how un-predictive it was to work as a sharecropper. One year you might have a good year and make decent money but the next year things can take a turn for the worse, without really much you can do about it.From a young age I have always had an interest in cooking so I attempted to pursue the food industry, particularly starting my own Mexican food restaurant. I asked some of my family members to help pitch in money for the start up cost. Seeing there was no real competition in Santa Maria in regards to Mexican food, I felt it was a good move on my part. I really enjoyed the idea of being my boss and being independent from everything else. My initial goal was to have my own business and build my own cliental but now my goal is to possibly retire and have someone run my business for me.

NAICS: 517 Telecommunications
Description: Franchisee of T-mobile
First, I would like a social life. So, I can meet lots of different people. More people mean more fun. I do not like work at a place without people communication because I think that is really boring. Secondly, I will be easier to take care of my kids if I choose this type of business. We have some rooms where are nearby my workplace can afford my kids to play or study. I can avoid to get day off for caring my kids. Third, I think there is a potential market for telecommunication service. There are lots of commercial industries and local residents around my store. For my initial goal, I guess I will get over one thousand customers in first five years, and I actually got eight hundred. In addition, I want to more people know this store because we can deal with different customer for different languages, such as English, Spanish, and Chinese.
