| I got into the buisness knowing that this is what I wanted to be. I started dying my hair when I was just in elementary school I would say in about 4th grade and from they're my love for hair dying and styling came to life. My initial goal from the start while growing up was to run salons more than work in them and just go place to place and work whenever I wanted and when I wanted. That was short lived when I started going to college to get my degree in cosmetology and realty hit me and I found out how expensive the world really is. So my goal then was to just have my own salon and make it family owned. It took allot of hard work and dedication but with the help and support of my husband I was able to do it. |

NAICS: 339 Miscellaneous Manufacturing Description: Wet Floor Sign |
| After spending thirty years in Environmental and Hospitality industry, I came up with an idea to start my own business. I wanted to have something for my own. The goal was to become independent. While working in the hospital, I often saw people cleaning the floor at any time. The idea was that I wanted to make a unique and special “Wet Floor Sign” which will catch people’s attention right away. This wet floor sign is not only helpful to protect people but also helps to protect the organization against law suits. Therefore, I came up with my business concept LED—wet floor signs with flashing LED. My initial goal in starting this business was to become independent of working for other companies where I was not tied by the vision of someone else. I can do as much or as little if I work hard enough and this was my initial thought. Bottom line is this in any business one must become a part of the program in so many ways for there to be a win win, I love being a hands on business person. |

NAICS: 562 Waste Management and Remediation Services Description: Environmental Remediation |
| The majority of my family members are business owners. I knew that I wanted to do this years back. I use to work for the city of Los Angeles doing environmental remediation, setting up projects for contractors to work on. I knew I wanted to do this because I had prior knowledge and knew everything that I had to do in order to be successful. I wanted to be independent and make my own decisions. I wanted to provide for my family and take charge and say I built something from the ground up. It has been successful since then I thank god. It took a lot of hard work and dedication and I'm glad I made every move I did because if I didn’t, I wouldn't be in the position that I am in right now. |

NAICS: 236 Construction of Buildings Description: Home remolding and interior designing |
| I have always had a interest in interior designing and remolding homes because I believe that this is a way for me to help people turn their ideas of a dream home into a reality, a home that they would love to walk into everyday. For designing a home it must be an idea of your own, making it visible is where I come into play. I enjoy looking around for unique colors and combining a personality to a room or multiple room depending upon the request. It adds character and that is what people want but don't know how to get it across. I stay close to the roots of my business with being the one responsible for decision making and selling myself as a professional with great service. Presenting a finished product and having clients appalled is what I look for. To show and let them know that they invested into the right person for the job. This way the client is very pleased to refer me to their friends and families. |

NAICS: 448 Clothing and Clothing Accessories Stores Description: Hair bows to sweatshirts |
| Making bows with my daughter as a craft. People started asking for bows for themselves and family members, so all the costs were coming from me. I decided to start selling the bows to just cover the costs of the material since the requests started coming in regularly. i eventually had to make a flat rate to sell the bows at, since costs of different ribbons were inconsistent I didn’t want to vary the prices of the bows individually (makes for an accounting nightmare) |

NAICS: 333 Machinery Manufacturing Description: Custom embroidery and longarm quilting |
| This started as a hobby and the goal was to share something that was meaningful for both of us. At the age of 8 and my father was a gardener landscaper and he said to me, “ son its time for you start working! I started at 8 so you are going to start at 8”. A Greek custom, thing! So I have been around business all my life. We still have family in the farm market. I grew up around this with my dad. This was here in the US- My father was born here but my pappous he was born in Greece and they grew flowers. I started a janitorial business in Orange County but it didn’t work because my wife was not supportive of it and lead to struggles at home. It was just too much time always from home. During the day I was a special education teacher and my intention was not to be in business but to be a broker. Starting and setting up account and selling them. My goal since I was a special educator was to help young people to build their business. I also had partners and my partners didn’t have the same goals I did. I was teaching in the daytime and the janitorial work was at night. I did it for about 4 years until God got my attention because I ended up in the hospital with a stress attack. I discovered that a lot of my stress was from trying to please my dad and I could never please my dad. I became a workaholic and the hole time I was doing it for the wrong reasons. I sold the business to my partner. With our business now it evolved for the right reasons. My honey is really good at sewing. We do sewing and crafting later we added embroider and design; later we added long arm quilting. We started in 1997, we actually only did sewing and crafting back then. My wife partnered with my sister who had a different idea of what product prices should be. She thought if you take the time and develop these skills then people better pay for it. We did the crafting corner at the Orange County swap meet and all of the sudden you surrendered your independence because you can’t even leave early if it raining unless they give you permission. The entire time you are trying to get the number 1 spot because once you do your sales go up 30%. My sister ends up leaving because she believed an item was worth $50.00 and she would not sell it for less. It came to the point we couldn’t sell anything. You have to have reasonable prices. We end up leaving the business too an we bought another business however that too didn’t work out because the person whom we bought the business from sold the accounts to someone else. We didn’t pay attention to the contract and the person whom we bought the business from stuck in a backdoor clause. There was nothing we could do. Now I am faced with the decision of what do I do now? Do I quit or go another direction? I leased our first machine and decided to stay in the business. This business is who I am! Because my wife is so passionate about I wanted to support her and do something together. All along it should have been u |

NAICS: 443 Electronics and Appliance Stores Description: security camera and installation business |
| It started for me in 2007 I was working for someone in a tech store and picked up all the knowledge and necessary skills to run this type of business on my own. Reason I decided to leave and start my own thing was my boss at the time did not appreciate the hard work that I put in, I was doing mostly everything myself it felt like and I got tired of it not only that I was also being underpaid for what I was doing. So I decided it was time to leave and do my own thing. My first initial goal I would say was just simply to prove to myself that I could first of start a business but then to thrive. |

NAICS: 812 Personal and Laundry Services Description: Beauty Salon/Barber Shop |
| 3. As mentioned in the first question, being creative and having a natural flare for colorful and unique hands-on skills inspired her to pursue a career in the beauty industry. “I love movies. I love James Dean movies, old Hollywood black and white films, all the classics…their sophisticated looks made me want to make ordinary people walk out of my shop feeling like a star” I really liked her energy. She was charged and fully aware of the potency in this question. I remember her smiling into the ceiling as if she recalled the first day and how proud she was when she got to open the doors of her own business. Her parents owned a small restaurant when she was growing up. Me[Name Removed] was quick to add, “You don’t want me behind a kitchen” Her family always encouraged her to pursue her dreams. She said, “I just had that fire and passion to be my own boss. I’ve never had an office job…I don’t envy my clients’ horror stories when they vent about co-workers, bosses, or the corporate life…I am grateful to not know what that is like. I enjoy their stories and just make them look and feel better about going back with confidence” |

NAICS: 339 Miscellaneous Manufacturing Description: Floral and Gourmet arrangement service |
| We were looking for new business opportunities as were struggling with our then current business of hair salons. My wife and I had done floral design class at a city college and so we thought may be we should look in to this new fruit bouquet concept. We started playing with it at home. We then contacted a well-known company for a franchise opportunity and while we were on a family vacation in New York, we went to meet executives in Hartford Connecticut. We learned a lot from that meeting and thought it was a good concept but lacked funds and decided not to do it. Few months later we were driving around a shopping center close to our house and saw a space for rent that we thought would be very affordable for a this type of business and few days later decided to open our own fruit arrangement business. We started with a game plan, came up with a name and logo. We hired a contractor to do the store build out and got all the permits. We created a website to sell our arrangements online. We placed several paper advertisements and since I already had great relationship with Penny Saver, they gave us the front page in several zip codes. We also did online advertising with Google Adwords. After the recession hit in 2009, we wanted to expand our reach into other markets. Our daily business slowed down a lot after 2009 economic crash. We were surviving with weekend wedding catering of fruit buffets and desserts so we were looking for ways to increase our weekday individual arrangement sales. We were contacted by a well-known floral retailer about an opportunity to join their brand name as a franchisee and they sent their sales rep from New York to meet with us. We decided to join them because it had minimal overhead and was based on commission. Bottom line, it’s a project my wife and I just took on, and from there things just took off. We have since then fallen in love with what we do. I don’t even think I had an official goal but it’s definitely nice that we have enough freedom to make our own decisions and I can be the family man I always wanted to be. |
