NAICS: 445 Food and Beverage Stores
Description: corner market
When I was growing up in Leeds, England, my parents wanted to make a family owned hotel/motel, but it was hard in the area we lived in. When we moved to the east coast of America, we created a small local liquor just out of the wanting of owning and managing something good. As I grew up, I went to college out in California but ended up dropping out because I was not making money only spending money on books and college fees. I then started four more stores one after the other before I was twenty-five years old. As I grew older, I wanted to fulfill their wish to create a business and I have created and sold four successful businesses working on my fifth. My hope is to create a chain of stores similar to 7-eleven and circle k.

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places
Description: Donut Shop
When I was younger i got my first job at a donut shop which is the last place I worked at. My manager was a nice fellow, he motivated me to do a great job and I really liked the business as a whole. It wasn’t until a few years later I felt I had gotten enough experience and decided that I wanted to pursue my own business and open up a donut shop. I got tons of advice from my manager and from my uncle, they both helped me a lot with opening my own business. It’s true that you’re more likely to be a millionaire by being your own boss, I enjoy having the freedom to run my business how I please and it definitely makes my job a lot more enjoyable.

NAICS: 321 Wood Product Manufacturing
Description: Organic US made longboard manufactuer
What lured me into making longboards and helped me decide to make a brand from my designs was the idea of having an extra income, being able to put a pool in my family’s backyard. My original thought was not to get into the skateboard industry, I was just making my daughter her first skateboard. A friend of mine saw the prototype and thought it was genius, that idea sparked the idea that maybe this could be something. Once I started working on the project, I quickly began to get even more creative from that first board. This then became such a cool and unique concept, I felt it had such a vibrant energy and life that it needed to be made and shared with everyone interested or intrigued.

NAICS: 812 Personal and Laundry Services
Description: coin laundromat
A relative offered to sell me his coin laundry, but after looking into the location I decided against buying his location. I then began a 6-7 month search looking for something that was affordable and held promise of expanding the sales. Prior to moving back to California from New Mexico I owned another coin-operated business in New Mexico so I was familiar with operating a cash business that had a coin based operation and one that relied on great customer relations. After all, being an owner operator requires you to engage in conversation with the customer, solve their problems and make them feel comfortable doing business with you. To sum it up,my goal was to grow the business and sustain that growth threw great customer service, a clean environment and properly working equipment. And my initial goal with this business is to harvest and sell it like I have done with other businesses that I have owned.

NAICS: 424 Merchant Wholesalers, Nondurable Goods
Description: Chemical Product Wholesalers
For us it was fairly easy as our father started the business. I joined him in July 1987 when the business was in a 1200 square foot office in El Monte. My brother, Al, joined the business in November of 1989. Together with our father, the three of us built the business from the ground up and now are in a 53,000 square foot building in Arcadia, have another 20,000 square feet of warehouse in Atlanta and are literally doing 10 times the annual sales volume in 1987 monthly today. Our goal was and still is to be the best manufacturer of tile and stone care products in the world, bar none!

NAICS: 423 Merchant Wholesalers, Durable Goods
Description: wholesale flags
I got into this business because I came up with an idea that would solve a problem and help businesses grow. At that time I used to own a couple of small liquor stores so in the beginning I took longer diving into it then I should have. I started selling door to door and once I started to see it take off I sold all my stores and put all the money into this business. I sent my younger brother to China in search for a manufacturer to distribute my product. The first trip was a fail. So after he came back I sent him back again and he found a supplier and we hit it off from there. My initial goal was to retail my product but after seeing a great opportunity to wholesale I now push my product in volume wholesaling.

NAICS: 445 Food and Beverage Stores
Description: Cake and candy Supply store
My significant other worked for the previous owners and that’s how we found out it was for sell. We then decided to buy the business and build up the business. When we bought the business we agreed that my significant other would run the business and I would do the book keeping, since I already knew how to do it from being an accountant previously. When we bought the business back in 1991 our goal was to make this business grow and make it successful. Since 1991 my significant other and I have almost tripled the amount of money the business has made from before we purchased this store. In 2013, I had taken a step back and have let my daughter take over most of the responsibilities of the store.

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
Description: MRI
"My goal was not even to continue in the business, I was working for a cell phone company. My brother needed help with his business. Later, he moved out of town. When you move out of town it is not easy to manage something that is here in California, so my brother signed himself off as the owner due to re-residing. So my brother gave me the business it is under my name, I have full control of it. Of course he comes back in town to do regular job duties and to take care of what he left off doing. This has helped me out so much! because of the money. it was to easy! No way I was going to pass up this offer, less time but more money? that is perfect! I have the say so of my own schedule that is the best part."

Description: Fast casual seafood restaurant
I wanted a change from the convenience store business. Initially the idea of owning a viable restaurant was appealing. The goal was to own a successful restaurant that served high quality food that people could enjoy for a good and fair price.

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places
Description: Malaysian restaurant
When I was a teenager, I moved to Holland to find work with relatives and make money for my family. I started as a dishwasher in a small restaurant. I came to find a passion and love for cooking. Through the years, I watched and learned how to cook through experience. It's a process, you don't just become what you seek to be. I started out washing dishes, next I was cutting and prepping food in the back of the kitchen, learning how to hold and use a knife. Then learning how to create the sauces and learning to use the wok. It takes time and a lot of practice to be good at. Once I developed this skill to a level I was satisfied with, I chose to open my own restaurant.
