NAICS: 312 Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing Description: first organic winery and brewery |
| I believe this was the most interesting part of the interview because this is where the business owner got a little bit more personal. When asked why you decided to get into this type of business, the owner responded, “I lost my marbles.” He states that even though he had a steady income with the same company for 17 years he did not feel fulfilled. The business owner was tired of redundancy. One day, he decided to end it and quit his steady income and take some time off. “The whole family thought I was crazy”, he said. After 6 months of trying to find himself, the owner decided to buy a wine kit and make his first batch. Once he made the batch, he felt so alive and rejuvenated. This was what first sparked his interest in becoming a wine maker. Because he felt so alive after making the first batch, he wanted to make another one, and another one and another one. Batch after batch, he felt fulfilled and alive, “it was an addiction”, he said. One random night at 2 am, his neighbor called the police on him because he looked suspicious while working in his two car garage, which he turned into a laboratory. The police officer said that he had to get a license and city permit if the premise was to produce more than 200 gallons of alcohol. By getting licensed, he was able to open up a storage unit to hold the wine that he had made. Once the storage unit was bought, he decided to turn it into a winery and open it up to the public. On opening day, he sold more than three months’ worth of wine. Since he was in need of a job, he decided to put all his efforts into the new winery. The business owner fulfilled his initial goals of getting licensed, acquiring a storage unit and getting employed. |

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places Description: Donut Shop |
| “About 10 years ago, my husband decided to open the donut shop because he had 15 years of experience working at my uncle’s donut shop. That’s how we met. He had the experience of what needed to be done to open his own shop, and so he decided that he wanted his own shop. I was working somewhere else at the time, working 10 hours a day for four days a week. But my husband needed me to help run the shop, so I agreed to take a 6 month break from work to help my husband. That was 10 years ago; I never ended up going back to my other job. It wasn’t my initial goal to own a donut shop, but my husband had wanted to from all those years of experience that I decided I would help him. It gets hard sometimes working 12 hours a day, seven days a week. But when you’re the owner, you have to be there to make sure that things are running well. It helps us to cut costs on hiring someone else, so we have our daughter working here to. She makes a little money for herself for things she needs, and goes to school. It is good for her because we can always work around her schedule, but I don’t want her to work here forever. I want her to choose her own career.” |

NAICS: 713 Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries Description: Fitness Gym |
| Wow! The way I got into this business was through my personal passion of fitness and hobby as I was growing up. I have been into fitness since a young age so when I was of age to compete I took advantage of it. At the age of 19 I earned my IFBB or pro card in my industry. Being so young and so driven and passionate I decided to open up my own private gym where I would train different types of people who were interested in competing and also making a better lifestyle change to their bodies. Fitness is and will always be my passion; I knew that I always wanted to make a living by doing what I love. My initial goal when first opening my business was to have the busiest and largest training facility in the valley; so far I have achieved that goal. It hasn’t been easy but with the help of my wife and employees I have been able to achieve that. |

NAICS: 311 Food Manufacturing Description: We manufacture and wholesale frozen fruit bars. |
| This company started off and continues to be run by my family. I was brought up in it, so it was an easy transition to make it my full time job. Initially my goal was to help interpret for my parents, who did not know how to speak English well enough to communicate with bankers, suppliers and customers. I started by helping them purchase our raw materials directly from the manufactures and not from the retailers. Over time the rest of my siblings got involved in the business as well. Which helps the company to remain a family owned business. |

NAICS: 311 Food Manufacturing Description: Quick Service Restaurant |
| The owner stumbled upon after many years of marketing. Before owning this company he did the following; marketing design for three years, marketing director for eight years, and twelve years in marketing commercial real estate. After these years he happened to invest in owning a restaurant. It took him severe training out of the state, a degree, and a few thousand dollars for him to achieve his dream. Many people go to become owners, nearly one hundred. Out of those one hundred only a handful are picked; Less than 15. The General Manager, Eddie, is also trying to achieve this same dream. However, it is a very difficult task to achieve. I decided to go for this company because I saw and noticed the opportunities and care that they give to the people. Also, I wanted to go for a company with biblical values and integrity. The goal was to win. To becoming an owner of a franchise/corporate building was his one and only goal. They have very strict biblical principles that needs to be met with. |

| What inspired him to pursue this career was providing justice for the innocent. At an early age he was exposed to violence and couldn't do anything about it. After experiencing this he decided he wanted to be there for those who need help and can't defend themselves. Sometimes a tragedy can happen If help does not get there in time. Educating the community and knowing the early warning signs is imperative to prevent a tragedy. His mission statement is to help out the community, be the voice for the innocent, and let people know that there is someone out there who cares and is willing to help. |

NAICS: 561 Administrative and Support Services Description: Kill unwanted pests in or around houses, commercial buildings, do |
| My father is the one who got me hooked on business. He taught me what business life is all about. When I used to work for other companies, I noticed I had a problem with people who had authority over me. Sometimes they tended to accuse me for slowing down the company production due to my hearing impairment. They did not even have patience to communicate with me. I was afraid that the employees would use me as a scapegoat, and there was no trust between the boss and me. But, as owner of a company, I realized that I am the boss. I do not have to worry about employees pointing fingers or blaming me for something I did not do. I will teach the employees to be patient with me while we are communicating. My primary goal is to expand the company. For example, I can franchise the company so other small companies can follow the methods performed by this company. |

NAICS: 811 Repair and Maintenance Description: Auto repair shop |
| I decided to get into this type of business because I had been working in automotive repair field for many years. I work for Toyota Company then I move to work at MasterTech Company. I take classes and get a certificate from Citrus College to get more information and get the certificate from this specific field. After that the previous owner wanted to sell the business I thought that it was a good opportunity because the business went well at that time and I knew that they were a lot of customers who satisfy and trust us, so I took over the business and manage by my own by using my experience while I was working as an employee. Nowadays, I still keep in touch with the previous owner to ask for suggestion because he had managed this business before, and then I asked him to be the manager of my shop. My initial goal is to provide great service and high-quality automotive repairs to make our business thrive in Rowland Heights city which has so many competitors in this area. Our company continually strives to be on the cutting edge of technology with advanced diagnostic equipment, training, and experienced professional technicians. I want my customers to spread the word about us to their family and friends. |

NAICS: 445 Food and Beverage Stores Description: Fast Food business |
| Well, I have honestly always wanted to be a business owner since I was a kid! My dad owned his own restaurant when I was a kid and it has always been a dream to open mine and I am proud to say that he actually helped me into making all of this possible! By receiving help from my family I was able to stay confident and motivated so that we may see this through, for failure was not an option what so ever. The fact that I just love food is an added bonus! As you can see through my social networks working at [Name Removed]; a place that only sells sub sandwiches, I am not exactly able to expand my horizons on a set menu. So through "Instagram" and Twitter I provide my fans with personal dishes to advertise my expertise within the food industry as being a chef. Now, I chose [Name Removed] particularly because it was a very easy started and far less demanding than the franchising of other major corporations such as McDonalds or even Subway. Furthermore, the numbers on how much profit and the liquidity of my freedom further helped me along with my decision. |

NAICS: 722 Food Services and Drinking Places Description: Japaneses sushi bar |
| This started as a family business and the first was located in city of industry. It has been going very well and I do not know when it exactly opened because we bought out the place. It’s been under several different ownerships and we now have been running the place for about five years. However, since we worked as a family there have been some disputes on how to run the restaurant. There were many things I wanted to do and unfortunately they were not open to change. I felt like everyone was against me and did not think my plans would bring in better business. So I decided to open my own. Then the family thought sure why not. They thought I could run it but it would not be as successful as them so we decided to open a brand new restaurant located in Monterey Park. We then decided to make it a friendly family competition to see who shall succeed the most. It was a little rough at first since it was a brand new location with no ownership. People knew the place as a pet store but now it’s a sushi bar. So far it’s been almost two years and I think I won the competition. |
