NAICS: 519 Other Information Services Description: Discreet Coupon Deals |
| I remember opening one of those Valpak envelopes in the mail, and looking through the deals they send. From this, I realized that the deals inside the envelope are tailor made for the neighborhood because the deals included the businesses in our area. One of the coupons in the envelope had a great deal to this high class restaurant, $50 dinner for two, the dinner costing $150 regularly. I remember thinking; I am not going to take my girlfriend to a high class restaurant only to use a coupon. The deal was so great; it bugged me for days that I couldn't use it. And one day, it just occurred to me that I can turn this into a business. So I immediately got help from my lawyer friend into patenting the idea of using coupons through a mobile device or the internet discreetly. After that, I didn't know whether I should sell the patent to Living Social or Groupon, but at the time they were only interested in building their own company since they were still fairly new at the time. So I did the unthinkable and started my own company incorporating the patent pending process of using coupons discreetly. |

NAICS: 811 Repair and Maintenance Description: High Rise Window Cleaning |
| Well, initially, I had no desire to get into this type of business. I mean who would? Its not fun work, it’s actually kind of scary sometimes. I did not want to start in this business, but I had the opportunity too. After being around it for a short period of time, I figured out that I didn’t need a boss. This was something I could do on my own. So I went for it and here I am today. It’s all about taking risks in starting your own business and with risk comes reward, of course after a lot of hard work too. |

NAICS: 315 Apparel Manufacturing Description: custom faux fur wedding accessories |
| I got into this type of business because I always had an interest in sewing from the time I was a child and I knew I wanted to own my own business. I got a degree in accounting and worked for CPA firm. Knowing about business was important to me, but I wanted to focus on what I enjoyed doing. I started taking courses at my local junior college in the fashion department, and became an assistant to one of the professors, for three years. I wanted to teach at the school, but I needed to have work experience in the industry, before I would get hired. Since I didn’t want to get a job out in industry, I decided to start my own business. |

NAICS: 541 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services Description: police and fire job listings |
| I did not choose this business, I kind of fell into it. Back in 1997, I had just gotten divorced, had 5 children to support and desperately needed a job. My goal at the time was to provide an income in any way possible. I had a friend who was a firefighter, and this was originally his business. He needed extra help juggling both jobs and hired me to help out. Eventually, he made me a partner. Over the next couple of years, he signed the business over to me and it became 100% mine. I did not have to buy him out. Reflecting back, I think it was God’s way of providing for me. |
