I entered this business because I applied to Baskin Robins and they ended up hiring me, once I was hired and stayed for a couple years I had an oppourtunity to take over the business, so I seized the oppourtunity. My goal was to start a family business, to keep my family employed, and where we could utilize each other’s strengths and grow from there. In the future we want to continue to expand and build new stores.

Description: Landscape Design
Ever since I was a little guy, I would often ponder the possibilities on what I was going to do when I got older. Growing up, working all of my life gave me a sense of self gratitude, and made me think that 1 one day I was going to be able to run my own business. I have always had an appreciation for good design, as related to architecture and landscape architecture. In college I would attend my classes and get strange looks from other students, wondering if I was in the wrong class because back them African Americans were not getting into architecture. This feed my inner self to be the best student in class and make my other students second guess what they though of me in the beginning. My initial goal was to create great spaces for families as it relates to healthy communities. Also, to rejuvenate a sense of community that may have been lost at the time.

The purpose of any business is to find a market of profitable customers. I felt that this was a good market to go into for that reason. From what I saw from people that I knew was that they were making good money starting with this franchise. I decided that I would jump in and now I own six stores.  My initial goal in starting this business was to make a profit.

Description: Mens and Boys Shoe Manufactoring
3.) I got into this business with the initial goal of moving to Mexico with my family.  It is from where I am from in the state of Guanajuato where I have family.  The city of Leon was located next to the town where I had lived before, and that city has the dominant shoe industries in the nation of Mexico.  I have family that was already in the business and I saw it as a livelihood.  Being successful in that business was the main idea and with the demand that is placed here it set itself step by step.  It took time and money to get started, but with the tips of the family around us there was a path open to go through.

Description: Neighborhood Financial Services Center
I spent 15 plus years in the Neighborhood Financial Services Center. The business was for sale and we were in a position to purchase. Our goal was to maximize profits and we expanded to 15 locations. Looking back I think I thought it was a great opportunity because I had been in the business so long I knew all the in’s and out’s, or at least I felt I did. And although we have had our difficulties along the way I don’t think it was anything any young business owner has run up against themselves. I feel that figuring it out as we went, although difficult, made us stronger as a business and a unit.

NAICS: 236 Construction of Buildings
Description: Home Remodeling
My father was in the industry and he taught me a lot of what I know today.  Sometimes he would be fixing things around the house when I got home from school and I would help him. Occasionally I would go to work with him and it was hard work but I liked it.  It took some time to learn the different things he taught but eventually it stuck.  I have had my fare share of mistakes and sometimes the only way to learn is by trial and error (but not all the time).  By the time I got my own home I found myself doing the repairs.  Before I started the company I worked with my dad for a few years as a second job to get extra money to pay the bills, but along the way I’ve realized that I really love what I do and I’m good at it.  On top of all of that I get paid to do it and that is a win-win for me.

Description: tax preparation
I had two small kids at the time and being a tax preparer would only take me 3 to 4 months out of the year.  It was something I learned in college and knew how to do and doing it on my own gave me enough freedom to take care of my family and still run a business.  I even went as far as putting my kids in a school located down the street from my office so if there was ever an emergency I could pick them up really quick.  My main goal aside from having that liberty of being my own boss and the flexibility I could give myself was also to make enough money that I didn’t have to work the rest of the year.  Of course now my kids are older and I do not only do taxes but I have branched out into insurance, accounting, and payroll services as well as my traffic and driving school.
