NAICS: 236 Construction of Buildings Description: Lays bricks, blocks, and stone. |
| I got into this business because when my brothers and I were teens in Mexico the only job we could get was as construction workers. We hated our boss but we needed the money. We came to America and we continued doing the same thing, but this time people were impressed. We didn’t know the language but we had the skills. We eventually started getting our lives together and settled down. My brothers and I did side jobs and we started our families and practically rebuilt our houses and we loved it. The business was there all along but it didn’t have a name. I started this business so that all our kids could have something and be able to say their fathers did something in this world maybe not so big but when driving by house we worked on they can see and recognize our work and be proud of us. My main goal was to unite my family and to have something that could help us out in life. I would have to say the boss I hated so much actually revealed to me my passion in life. |

NAICS: 311 Food Manufacturing Description: Chinese Bakery |
| From the beginning, I never thought it would be my business at all. I was thinking of working for a trade company because that was my major when I was in college. My husband didn’t want to go back to work in his father’s family business. He felt his life would be difficult if he had to work with his father. As a wife, I have to support my husband. |

NAICS: 423 Merchant Wholesalers, Durable Goods Description: Comic Book and Toy Store |
| Goes back to childhood, loved toys, loved cartoons loved comic books. When I was younger there would be certain stores I would love to go to because they were different from any other one but when I first started my business I wanted to give to people or to kids especially, somewhere where they can be odd and have their breathe taken away. To a point I feel like I have achieved that but at times I feel like I failed to keep persevering in that area, that was the main initial goal. Why I felt like I wasn’t persevering? You come to a point where your tired of doing the same thing and you feel like your not getting anywhere, your not earning money you feel like the walls behind and everywhere else is closing up on you. It’s kind of like a relationship or any other commitment your in, at a point you feel like you need to get out. Who are we kidding? When school gets tough we don’t drop out, when we fall off the bike we get back on, we need to keep pushing because theres going to be those moments and you need to dig deep inside and go for it. I wasn’t looking at anything longterm, I was thinking I could do this now and I can do something later. This now became an infatuation of mine that I wanted to keep going and I was happy even though there were times where I felt like I was killing myself to keep doing it. |

NAICS: 425 Wholesale Electronic Markets and Agents and Brokers Description: Manufacturer Representative |
| I didn’t decide. Rather, the need for a job to buy food brought me into this market. In 1981 I moved from Iowa to California looking for a job. I had three years of college but no way to pay for another so I decided a change of scenery may do me good. Unemployment in my hometown was at 18% due to the impending closing of two huge plants - The meat packaging plant and John Deere. There was just no work to be found. I loaded my little compact car (1981 Dodge Colt) and drove west. I found an employment agency and was eventually offered two jobs. One was as a bookkeeper at a jewelry store (I took accounting and business at Loras College) and the other was at Graybar Electric in downtown Los Angeles. Graybar paid about $50 more per month and with a little quick figuring I knew I could buy a lot more Ramen noodles and PB&J with that money, so Graybar it was. That was in August of 1981. By 1986 I was a junior partner at an Agency in town and by 1991 I owned my own business called Modern Industrial Sales Inc. We were a small company much like the one I own now. As I said, back in 1981, my initial goal was to eat. When I landed that job I had been going without much food and had about $26 to my name. It was a huge relief to say the least. |

NAICS: 236 Construction of Buildings Description: General Constructions |
| Previous I use to work for a firm as an estimating project manager. While I worked there I have started to begin to think if I have more education I can be doing better for myself. So I took more classes with what I am going to be working with and began developing my company. The thing that started it all was education, the more you know the better for yourself. The initial goal for me was to at least last for one year in the business. The goal has been met and I have lasted for four years now. Most businesses don’t make it this far and be successful. |

NAICS: 311 Food Manufacturing Description: Taco truck |
| Well originally I had no intentions to start up my own business. One of my good friends was the original owner of the taco truck and decided he didn’t want to do it anymore so he offered for me to take over. I thought it would be fun so I went ahead and accepted. My initial goal was to improve on what my friend had started. I had no intention to open up a restraint or anything though. I just wanted to have the taco truck on the side. I liked it that way and I felt like I had achieved my goals. |

NAICS: 311 Food Manufacturing Description: Mexican Food Restaurant |
| I decided to get into this type of business because I grew up working in this restaurant as a busboy. My parents were the owners of this restaurant since the year 1979 and it is the restaurant I have now as my own. My mother handed the restaurant over to me and this had been my only goal. As a teenager I would say that I was going to start my own restaurant as well as my parents, but since my mother handed this restaurant over, I never started my own. The restaurant is in my hands now and I just manage to keep it running as long as I can. |
